Część ustna egzaminu maturalnego z języka angielskiego trwa około 15 minut. Po wejściu do sali i przywitaniu się z egzaminującymi, zdający losuje jeden z zestawów i przystępuje do egzaminu.
Zgodnie z Informatorem opublikowanym na stronie Centralnej Komisji Egzaminacyjnej początek powinien przebiegać w następujący sposób:

W ramach rozmowy wstępnej egzaminujący zadaje uczniowi kilka pytań dotyczących jego życia i zainteresowań (UWAGA: lista pytań wyłącznie w zestawie dla egzaminującego). Takie otwarcie egzaminu ma na celu lepszą i szybszą asymilację zdającego z egzaminem.
